In short

ChatGPT, GPT Image and DALL·E images carry a signed C2PA manifest that names OpenAI. Drop an image and Gireta reads it in your browser. If the manifest was stripped by a screenshot or a social app, the visual check looks for the tells instead and the result says so.

How ChatGPT images are labelled

OpenAI adds C2PA Content Credentials to images made in ChatGPT and through its image API, and to Sora stills. The manifest names OpenAI as the issuer and records the image as created by a generative model.

The label lives in the file, not the pixels. A screenshot, a crop in some apps, or an upload to most social networks removes it. OpenAI's images also carry an invisible watermark that Google's SynthID Detector reads.

Visual tells in GPT Image output

  • Very clean, evenly lit studio look, even for casual scenes
  • Text that is legible but slightly too perfect, or wrong in small words
  • A warm, slightly yellow colour cast in older outputs
  • Hands and small objects that blend at contact points

How the check works

  1. 1

    Content Credentials and IPTC

We read the file's C2PA manifest and XMP metadata for the IPTC digital source type. “Trained algorithmic media” means a generator made it; “composite with trained algorithmic media” means AI edited a photo.

  2. 2

    Generator fingerprints

Stable Diffusion, ComfyUI, InvokeAI and NovelAI write their settings into PNG files, and many tools name themselves in the software field. We read every text chunk and EXIF field.

  3. 3

    Camera data

Real cameras record make, model, lens and exposure settings. We read them all and weigh them with everything else.

  4. 4

    Close visual inspection

A vision model inspects the image for the tells generators leave: hands, teeth, text, reflections, repeated backgrounds and over-smooth skin.

What the verdict means

VerdictWhat decided it
AI-generatedThe file's own provenance or generator settings say AI made it. This is as certain as it gets.
AI-editedProvenance says a photo or image was changed with generative AI.
Camera originalContent Credentials record a camera capture.
Likely AINo provenance, but the visual check and other clues lean towards AI.
Likely a real photoNo provenance, but camera data and the visual check lean towards a photo.
Mixed signalsThe evidence points both ways. Check the original file or run a reverse image search.

Questions

Can you tell if an image was made with ChatGPT?

Yes, if the file still has its Content Credentials: Gireta reads them and names OpenAI. Without them, the visual check can say whether it looks AI-made, but not prove it was ChatGPT specifically.

Do DALL·E images have a watermark?

They carry C2PA metadata rather than a visible mark. The metadata is lost in screenshots.

Is the Gireta AI image detector free?

Yes. There is no sign-up and no limit on the file checks. The visual check is rate limited per visitor to keep it free.

Do you keep my image?

No. The file is read in your browser and never uploaded. For the visual check, a small preview (at most 1024 pixels wide) is sent, inspected and discarded.
